My read is that it's bad publicity for the reporter. You don't need a
freaking disk to set up internet access and openoffice is quite
compatible - it was already loaded!!
Most of the larger ISPs, cable or dsl, provide proprietary software and
imply you need to use it. Of course it's all bull, but what do noobs know.
Even if OOo is mostly compatible, she could have bought crossover for linux
and run true word.
I agree with you that the piece is just plain ol' bad reporting (is there
any other kind?) and most of it is probably bull.
My faulting MATC is because they should have provided guidence to the
student. When I took calculus, the teacher made us aware we needed graphing
calculators. We were told which brands were acceptable and where to buy
them (that's what bookstores are for). Many new students come into a new
digital landscape with little experience. Hello! If you're gonna be a
teaching institution, then teach!
The more times you read that article, the more absurd it sounds, like it
just might have been a set-up piece. Regardless, and despite my opinion,
ubuntu is dead last on the list of things gone wrong.
