Increasing sound volume in video files

I have a few files in avi, mpeg and other formats in which the
sound level is kind of low - I have to change the relevant settings on my
sound board all the way to the top if I am to hear the soundtrack in
those files. On the other hand, I have many other video files in which
the sound level is sufficiently loud all right.
Is there a simple way of increasing the sound level in a given
video file (avi, mpeg, mkv, whatever)? Thanks.
