What about your video card? I use Mandriva and KDE. I don't use Ubuntu,
and I don't use Gnome, so perhaps my experience isn't relevant, but I
saw a large difference in speed when I replaced my aging nVidia video
card with a newer one. It's especially true with KDE 4, with all that
unnecessary but kinda cool eye candy.

I have:
NVida GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
AGP 4x,
Video Ram: 64 MB
GPU Frequency: 249 MHz

My computer is almost 8 years old. I was told once that I would not
be able to find a new video card to fit my motherboard. Is this true?

Ah, but you didn't look for yourself, did you? I was actually using the same card a couple of years ago. (My computer is a bit over 7 years old.) When it became clear that the card was no longer adequate, I went looking for a new one. I finally settled on one from Newegg, an AGP 8X BFG-made nVidia Geforce 6200 OC with 256MB of DDR memory. Not a performance card by today's standards, but more capable than the one I was using. While that card is no longer available from Newegg, I just looked and similar cards from other manufacturers are.

To be fair, I also increased the RAM on that particular machine to 2GB, but I did that *before* buying the new video card. The card made a bigger difference in speed with the eye candy-heavy KDE4 than the RAM did.

And, there's always Ebay. Similar improvements were found using a BFG-made nVidia FX 5500 AGP card that I purchased on Ebay in a system with but 512MB of RAM. However, that system is only used for browsing and the occasional email, so I don't know how it might work with OpenOffice.
