The setting for vlc are in the file ~/.vlc/vlcrc.  You can edit this
file, looking for the word "fullscreen" or you can open vlc and
edit your preferences with "Settings->Preferences".  Click on "Video" and
look for "fullscreen"


Thanks, I took door number 2 -- which wasn't on the main menu of the
window but in the context ( mouse ) menu
