Simple sound recording

I used to use gramofile, a simple command-line sound recording program
that apparently has not been maintained since 2001. The last time I
tried to run it, it complained there is no /dev/dsp1 and there isn't.
Is there any simple way to record that is compatible with whatever has
been done to Linux sound in the intervening years?
.
