Run alsamixer

If pulseaudio is running, then it is necessary to check
the input levels under both ALSA native with

# ps ax | grep -i pulse
17515 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep -i pulse

# ps ax | grep -i audio
1640 ? S< 0:00 [hd-audio1]
17517 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep -i audio

Don't think it is running.

alsamixer -D hw:0

and then just

alsamixer

No joy. :'(

What does "No joy" mean? Your wife refused to sleep with you because you
were spending all your time on the computer? Please, we have no way of
knowing that is going on except through what you tell us. What resulted
when you ran alsamixer or alsamixer -D hw:0?

for the default, which is presumably set to pulseaudio.

For this latter operation it is also possible to use

gnome-volume-control (Gnome2)

which has now been replaced by gnome-sound-applet (Gnome 3) to invoke

gnome-control-center sound

Then go to the input tab and adjust the input volume.

If the microphone is correctly connected and the input volume set
appropriately, the sound level meter on the input volume tab
will show some activity with sound picked up by the microphone.

I am using the old gnome. Who do I get at the level meter?

There is gnome-sound-recorder which may work instead of arecord,
but when I tried it many years ago, it refused to work, but maybe
they have finally fixed it.

EXTRA info: I actually have a second HDMI sound card on my nVidia
GT210 video card. I have gone to great pains to make sure I am
directing everything to the audio on my motherboard. I figured I
had succeeded when I can play music through my (non-hdmi) speakers.

It would be best if you unplugged that second sound card or disabled it
in hardware/bios. When trying to debug anything, the fewer potential
conflicts the better.
Then run alsamixer and tell us what you see.

Or run arecord -L and arecord -l
and tell us what you get.
