Our vunerability to abuse, from the over dependance on google

There are many web search tools out there; Google wasn't even the 'first'.
Sometimes a search engine can be beaten by a directory
<http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/>. A
meta-search engine condenses results from several web search engines.

I understand that there's yacy & blekko which are attempts to
make non-proprietry facilities; which should be the ultimate
goal. But just for a quick short-term 'plan B', what can I/we
use.
I currently use Ixquick (a meta-search engine with good privacy) or Teoma
(which was better before Ask Jeeves swallowed it, but the bare-bones
version now offered as an alternative to Ask.com still has its moments).

What are some corresponding 'templates' to test alternatives
to google?
== TIA.
I think you'd like "Surfraw" <http://surfraw.alioth.debian.org/>

OK, thanks. That seems quiet a big story.
But it's always more difficult [initially] to NOT follow the
herd: like those who believed that they could mortgage their house
for beer money.
I'll investigate it when I get time.
And hope it runs on other-than debian.
