Hi,
I have this problem and I don't know what to do with it.. I have a linux
machine (slackware 8.1) with apache installed (1.3.26). I have my own site
on this machine which uses PHP4 and MySQL as well.
Every once in a while people are not able to visit my site. To them it seems
that the server is not reachable at that time, although the server itself is
still alive (it can be ping-ed at these times, and I can also log in with
putty). After some time the webserver would be back again.
At first I thought it was some DNS problem.. But after making sure DNS was
configured properly the problem still existed. Then I thought it could be
some memory problem because I saw my amount of available memory dropping
each time the site was accessed. After increasing the amount of swap memory
the problem still existed.
Recently I noticed that at the time of this "unavailability" of the
webserver, a socket is in the FIN_WAIT1 state. I don't understand how this
can be happening because the site is accessed using the regular browsers
(IE, Netscape, etc..) and socket handling shouldn't be a problem I guess.
Furthermore, even if a socket is not shut down properly it should not hang
up the entire site!
Does anyone know what could be wrong here?? Your help would be greatly
appreciated..
Marcel
