apache tomcat with access control lists

Can someone please explain how to configure tomcat to utilize ACL's or
htaccess? Essentially, the site Im working on will authenticate prior
to allowing access to static content whether it be .html or .doc . We
do not want the user to be able to bookmark the link, and then access
it again later without challenge. I would like to find a way to have
tomcat authenticate via an existing database. Can this be done? I am
fairly new to Tomcat, so any help is appreciated!
