I second that notion about using ssh. Why would you want to install X and
VNC if you are only going to be doing is DNS? That is easy enough to do
with ssh (or Putty in Windows) and any text editor ('pico' from the pine
package is easy to use if unfamiliar with Linux, 'pico -w' avoids the
default wordwrap, or some systems have 'nano' which works the same).

Is "600 meg" disk space or MHz? Just do a minimal install of whatever
Linux you are familiar with, and add bind9, documentation, and whatever
other packages you need. If you are not at all familiar with Linux, it
helps to get a boxed set with manuals the first time. Make sure that you
can get DNS working locally before you go live (see DNS HOWTO). Just make
sure you keep up with any security updates.
