    Hi,

I am trying to set up my home network for sharing dial-up (PPP to
surfbest.net) connection to Internet and some server functions
(email, IMAP synchronization, and news) for two notebooks (mine
Linux Debian only and my wife's switching to dual boot Windows
XP/Linux Debian). I have old Dell OptiPlex GXM 5133 which I would
love to use as a server connected to Internet via dial-up. Then
I have bought in the local BestBuy D-Link DI-514 wireless router
(they had a mail-in rebate on it, so it would cost just $39.99),
which I would love to use as a central point connecting all three
computers. Something like this (wi-fi card for the second
notebook would be bought later when I will save some money for
    it):

                                                This is an Ethernet
                             +-------------+ cable
    +----------+ +---+ | PC desktop | /
    | Internet | -- |PPP| -- | 192.168.0.1 | -- 192.168.0.3
    +----------+ +---+ +-------------+ +---------------+
                                                | router + wi-fi|
                                                | 192.168.0.2 |
          +---------------+ +---------------+
          | notebook2 | Ethernet
          | 192.168.0.5 | |
          | Orinoco/wi-fi | +------------+
          +---------------+ | notebook1 |
                                                 | 192.168.0.4|
                                                 +------------+

I was able to setup most software on the server (i.e.,
IP-Masquerade, syncing remote server with notebook emails,
news-server) so that it works with one notebook attached via
cross-over cable. However, hardware is (as always for me)
a challenge. Whatever, I am trying to do with the router (it has
only web-based configuration system and the intended use of it is
obviously for sharing DSL/Cable connection), I cannot get from
any notebook to the server. Do you know, whether there is any way
how to do it, or I should use offered money-back guarantee and
return it back to the BestBuy and get something else? Is it
a hub, which I need to get instead of the router? However, if
I will later buy DSL, will I have throw that hub away and buy
real router or could I use Linux computer instead?

Could you please refer me to some documentation on D-Link DI-514
router and how-to persuade it to work as mere router?

Thanks for any help (it's getting really nervous here),

          Matej
