sending pkt_too_big

on one of my servers i noticed these messages :
sending pkt_too_big (len[1704] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[1704] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5539] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5539] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5539] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5539] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5539] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5587] pmtu[1443]) to self
sending pkt_too_big (len[5587] pmtu[1443]) to self
Also, the person behind that server couldn't send an email with an
attachement of 8K, it resulted in a timeout after DATA on the mail server.

eth1: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x786d advertising 05e1 Link 45e1.
Could the via rhine be the cause ? I didn't found very much on the net
about this problem. I know it has something to do with MTU and PMTU.
