This _can_ get frustrating, can't it?

While trying to get your inet connection always be sure your firewall
is off. Not really needed if you're using the supplied Lokkit scripts
-- just be sure it's set to allow DHCP.

Your problem is almost certainly with your "connection" setup at the
modem. RH is very good at setting up proper DHCP for a CM using
ethernet (rather than USB) port.

BTW RH will use dhclient and set it up properly -- but it uses
different config files than indicated in man pages (so don't bother
chasing them -- see RH Customization and Reference guides).

Make sure the CM LEDs indicate a "locked" signal before trying to
bring up the eth interface. Some ISPs are pretty slow at this -- you
may have to "delay" kernel loading to give it time.

Make sure that your settings in "neat" are correct. At terminal
prompt (as root) simply type:
[root]# neat
Double check each tab and also check the settings revealed when you
"edit" an entry.
Make sure that you're using correct protocol -- most will use DHCP but
some _may_ use bootp. Until you're sure about how RH configures and
brings up an interface, I would not try to "hand edit" -- too many
files/scripts in too many places -- and just use neat.

To check CM connection issues varies with brand of modem (and some ISP
settings) but for a start you can try to go to this web page
(generated in CM):
http://192.168.100.1/

Of course you may have to "borrow" someone else's net connction for
the following 2.

For the most excellent and handy-to-have-at-hand help try here (can't
recommend it enough for CM users -- especially the DocsDiag for
serious CM troubleshooting). Don't be fooled by it's UK/Ireland
details:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html

You can also check here to see if there are any ISP issues you need to
be aware of:
http://www.dslreports.com/

I've _never_ had any trouble with RH's DHCP setup for an
ethernet-to-CM-to-ISP connection. It's _always_ been an issue with
wiring or ISP's network.
