That's not the exact message; hand-copies of half-remembered messages
are Bad Things.

That said, if the error message is from pppd then it usually means the
chat script failed.

Add the chat -v option (assuming that RH uses chat to connect and will
let you change it's options), try again to connect, and post an exact
copy of the chat log messages.

If this is a "Winmodem," or relative thereof, then you may not get a
satisfactory answer.
