ftp is just fine, as scp, to get the ifconfig counter running and
see if speed is reasonable. For getting out the last few percent
out of your equipment, those tools might be fine, while "tuning"
but OT for the OP.

That would be a good start, perhaps there's just a duplex
mismatch, quite common.
