Hi,
I am running SuSE 8.1 on a notebook with a built-in Mitac SiS900
10/100 Ethernet card. Unfortunately, my wife stumbled over the
cable, by which it was pulled out violently, leaving the jack
damaged. As it is expensive to repair, about EUR 300, I bought
a PCMCIA at EUR 22 only, now encountering, however, difficulties
to configure it correctly.
Problem 1: No automatic network connection
==========================================
The PCMCIA was recognized by Yast as a Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+
to be started by Hotplug, as are all removable devices, such as
PCMCIA and USB. But when the Computer boots, the start fails with
the message:
*********************************************************************************
eth-pcmcia-0 ifup: Configuration 'eth-pcmcia-0' has STARTMODE=hotplug: -> skipped
ifup: As we are called from rcnetwork we do not set it up, because
ifup: it was not set up manually or by hotplug before.
*********************************************************************************
So, I tried to start it manually by invoking
/etc/init.d/network { stop | start }
but that did not work either. Finally, I found out that the only
way to start it is pulling it out from the slot and putting it
back after some seconds. That's not just elegant, but thus I have
a remedy at least.
Problem 2: No ADSL connection
=============================
My two laptops and the ADSL device are all connected to an
Intellinet 5 Port 10/100 Switch which worked well without any
problems so far.
But now the connection of the new PCMCIA to ADSL does not work
any more.
Here are the messages appearing on the Kinternet log file when
I try to connect my computer:
**********************************************
Starting connection. (2004-03-24 08:31:11 CET)
warning: failed to bring eth-pcmcia-0 up
pppd: Plugin pppoe.so loaded.
pppd: PPPoE Plugin initialized
pppd: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd died: pppd options error (exit code 2)
**********************************************
And that's what appears on /var/log/warn:
********************************************************************
Mar 24 08:30:46 vobis pppd[4031]: unrecognized option 'eth-pcmcia-0'
********************************************************************
Thanks in advance for your help!
Wolfgang
