Linux on Linksys WRT54G

Hello,

I currently have a Linux firewall at home running on a P90, and I am
thinking about purchasing a Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Router and then
customizing it by building my own firmware, to replace my existing firewall.
However, before I go out and spend the $100, I'd like to find out what I can
and can't do with the Linksys box. I've been looking around on the net, and
so far everything looks promising, but the more info that I can get the
better.

Here's what I'd like to run on the box:
(all of which I have working for my existing setup)

- iptables firewall
- ssh or telnet on LAN side
- DHCP server with some fixed addresses
- DNS server both for caching on the LAN side, and for hosting a domain on
the WAN side
- A PPTP server on WAN side (PoPToP or equivalent), with 128bit encryption
- As many services using IPv6 as possible
- Connect to freenet6 over WAN side, forwarding back to LAN
- SOCKS server
- UPnP server
- Somehow seperate out machines on the LAN and one server in a DMZ. (It
appears that the box only has 1 NIC for the LAN, so I'm not sure how to do
this, maybe the software on the box can control the built-in switch?)

Does anyone have experience with running these services on a Linksys box?

I've read that there are some issues with compiling the kernel code that
Linksys supplies. Is that still true?

How does the box save config data? Will I be able to save data like my DNS
zones and DHCP config somewhere that won't get lost on reboot? (Other than
saving it with the actual filesystem, so there's no need to re-create the
filesystem image for each change in the config)

Any hints on what works and what doesn't?

Thanks,

Nathan
