This is not a standard, and if it is, it's a STUPID standard. I always
set up machines with eth0 on the LAN and eth1 or greater going out. I
have a perfectly logical reason for this: every place I work has a
local network. EVERY machine has an eth0 interface, so on all of them I
have that interface doing the same thing.

Sure, most people do seem to do it your way, eth0 going out and eth1 on
the LAN. Since when does "most people do it" make it right? Most
computer users use MS Windows. Most lemmings jump off cliffs (or so
they say; I'd have to see that for myself. :)
