Please be patient with me. I am new to Linux. I have 2 computers. One
windows xp machine with 2 ethernet networkcards.
One ethernetcard is connected using adsl with internet
Second card is connected to second computer

On this second computer i have installed Linux Red Hat 9.

At the moment the Linux machine is not directly connected to internet .
Later I want to configure internet through the windows machine (so first
over a private network from Linux to windows, then access internet there. I
have no idea yet how to do that, but that's or later concern. First I like
    to connect the 2 machines.

Linux is installed and starts ok. I want to configure the network. When I
look in the system tools there is a "Network Device Control", which is
empty. First i have to install a device. The only place to install the
device is the 'Internet configuration Wizard' (but there is no direct
internet connection). I can use this by selecting Ethernet connection and
other ethernet card. 3com501 is detected and selected, device eth0, irq
unknown to let it detect. This way i can install the device. It is inactive.
I can activate it here or in network device control both same result:
    "Cannot activate network device eth0"

    Restarting computer with errormessage:
Bringing up interface eth0: 3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present,
    delaying initialisation.

I had installed both machines with windows xp then the connection worked.

It seems i have selected the wrong adapter, but i believe it must be
correct. Is there some other reason for this message.

Any idea what the problem could be?

    Any one?

    Thanks,

    Geert-Jan
