No, we did a deal with Pandit Nehru to grant independence after WW2 in
return for Indian support of the Allies. A complex matter, like
everything to do with India, because Nehru wouldn't have survived an
Axis invasion for either east or west, his armed forces might well have
proved more loyal to George VI than to him, and he was in a relationship
with a certain English lady that would have been very embarrassing for
all if it had become widely known.
What he didn't expect was that we would agree with Muhammad Ali Jinnah
to create Pakistan.
