Right, consider placing the details in to /etc/hosts and /etc/networks -
most good applications will avoid lookups if the details are there.

apt-get install synaptic (if you don't already have it)
synaptic
Then find the package you want
www.freshmeat.com is a good place to look

Consider using the openSSH toolkit if you want to do local (secure) file
transfers. It includes both scp and sftp (secure copy, secure ftp)
programmes that send data with watertight security. Not childsplay to set
up but a very effective and time saving solution when set up.
