The access point is easy: setup via http is supported by most boxes and your
favorite browser will do the job. MAC authentication is also commonly
supported. Since spoofing a MAC address is so easy, this offers very
little in security. Encryption is more secure, but not completely safe.
Finding wireless clients for linux is more challenging, especially since
manufacturers seem to delight in changing chips without changing the model
number. It is wise to buy from a vendor that will accept a return without
penalty. Poke around the web for a good price for whatever card is rumored
to work (lately) with linux and try that. Or try the Asus wl-330g which
avoids all the pain by not needing a driver.
