    First off, thanks for the ongoing help. If this were a winmodem and/or
    required a driver would I have been able to make that previous connection?

    Once I point minicom to /dev/ttyS0 it works, which lead me to believe this
    was a normal modem?

    This is where I get confused. I've seen references via google stating
    that I need a driver, hence I have a winwodem. But... I've seen other
    references stating that it should work without any other drivers.
