Samba has many options, and combined with problems with the way it
all works, you could be in for a long haul. One way to start is with
liveCDs like knoppix and mepis which whave samba installed and working
so that it connects to other PCs.

After a hard disk install, I started with generous insecure
samba shares on the linux box by configuring the smb.conf file
and then when its all working the way it should be working
(which you can check on the samba logs),
play with the configuration files to get more security etc operational.
