exportfs problems

I have a small, 30 node (60 cpu) Linux cluster running various versions
of RH Linux depending on the year the various nodes were purchased. The
most recent set of nodes are running RH Enterprise 4. RHE4 can
cross-mount file systems on nodes running RH7.3 or RH9.0 but no nodes
(RH7.3, RH9 or RHE4) can cross-mount file systems on the RHE4 nodes.
I think the RHE4 systems are not exporting their file systems.
My /etc/exports file contains the line:
/exports/home fire42(rw,async) fire43(rw,async)
When I type exportfs -a -v I get
exporting fire43:/exports/home
exporting fire42:/exports/home
when I cat /proc/fs/nfs/exports I get
# Version 1.1
# Path Client(Flags) # IPs
What am I missing? Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
