Re: will gigabit ethernet help autonegotiation problems go away?

I don't have access to the original posting, but it looks like this is
only a 100 Megabit NIC, is that correct? I don't see any mention of 1
Gigabit anywhere, so if problems take longer to crop up with the new
switch, it's not because the traffic is moving faster.

I keep coming back to your statement that everything was fine if you
forced half duplex. Force half duplex, run for a good long while, and
save the results of ifconfig. Then reboot or unload/reload the driver
so the counts zero, allow autoneg or force full duplex, run for a while,
and save the results of ifconfig. Are any of the error counts non-zero?

Hi Allen,

These are all gigabit cabable NIC's. 82541GI/PI to be exact, on
SuperMicro X6DVA-EG motherboards. We also are having problems with
82540EM gigabit NIC's on a different SuperMicro motherboard.

Our switch was an unmanaged Netgear FS516 switch that we upgraded to a
gigabit switch just yesterday, on the advice of Redhat and SuperMicro.
Their reasoning was that even if there were autonegotiation problems,
that they should go away if we switch to a gigabit switch.
Unfortunately, they didn't go away, but just seem to happen less.

I will try what you suggested, but won't be able to for a while, since
I think we would need to switch back to the 10/100 switch to do what
you mentioned.

Yeah, the "everything fine when we ended up being in half duplex" seems
to be the key. We let it run for over 24 hours, and there were no
problems whatsoever. In autonegotiate under the 10/100 switch and
gigabit autonegotiate on the gigabit switch, we get problems at least
every hour. (And we tried two of each type of switch with no luck.)

Thanks,
-Michael
