If you are going to run sshd, then forget the FTP server and just use
scp/sftp instead. Much easier to setup firewall rules for, and the
traffic is encrypted, so your login password doesn't go over the net in
clear text.
There are free Windows clients as well, if that is a consideration,
I have found that WinSCP3 is quite good.
I might just do that. The problem I'm discovering though is that my
cheapie little Linksys "Network Everywhere" router won't let me set up
forwarding for ssh on port 22. Keeps telling me i'm duplicating the
service or port, even though it's not set up. I may have to pick up
another router if I can't figure out what its problem is.
In the meantime, I contacted Charter with a fictitious name and address
(an empty lot down the street from me) and asked them about an
endorsement or option where I can pay extra to legitimately run a
server. Nonesuch exists. The person I talked to wasn't sure if moving
up to their 'Commercial' level would let me do that or not (c'mon
folks, know your product!) but it doesn't matter- they won't let me
have Commercial service in a Residential setting anyways.
So... I tried to be legit. I'd rather do it like that anyways, but oh
well. In this era of bittorrent and p2p networks, i still doubt my
little pet project will 'matter'.
It's nice to know that WinSCP3 exists, but I don't do much with Windows
these days :-)
Thanks for pointing it out though.
