It sounds like you have a little more sophisticated network than your
experience with Unix tools will support, and you need some help in
setting up your PPPoE so that it doesn't conflict with your network. If
If it's PPPoE, should ifconfig show us an eth interface?

If it is PPPoE, we should see both an eth interface /and/ the PPP
interface.

Additionally, if the OP has a local network, we should see the eth
interface for that network as well.

In other words, we should see something like
