Samba 3.0.22 - too many open files

Hello --

My system currently is Gentoo 2006.0, with a vanilla 2.6.16.10 kernel. I
recently installed the Samba 3.0.22-r3 ebuild.

I noticed that the NMB daemon would start up, but the SMB daemon would not.
Starting up the SMB daemon in --interactive mode saw it output this
message:

PANIC: assert failed at smbd/files.c(200)

The output of "cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max" is 206405
The output of "cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr" is 1712 0 206405

This Samba package was installed using "emerge samba", so I was not involved
in any patching or anything. Does anyone know what would cause this error
to occur?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
