Re: hosting a wireless access point

Hello,

I am looking into hosting my own wireless access point using a standard
wireless adapter (note: I am assuming this is possible) and have begun
searching for what is necessary. I have found host ap, but I am unsure
about a few things:

- It is mentionned that hostap is meant to enable roaming between
different access points. Is this something it does in addition to
simply allowing you to run an access point?

- It is mentionned that host ap only supports a few drivers. Again, I
am confused. If the wireless device is accessible via an existing
driver (whether via a native driver or a via ndiswrapper), why can't
host ap leverage that? Or is it that host ap needs to perform
operations that are not covered by regular drivers?

- If all i'm interested in is to broadcast an SSID and allow other
wireless hosts to associate with it, is there even a need for host ap
and something more than a regular wireless adapter?

Thank you,
spip

A totally different approach to the issue ...

What I did was purchase a Linksys WRT54G(s) (I purchased the
Linux/Open Source version but thats another story) and configured it
to NOT use DHCP or any other active protocal except WEP (in this
case).

Using this it just acts like a WAP and all control and authentication
(DHCP, NAT, etc) is done through my Linux box.

This way I remove the wireless "load" from my Linux box, remove the
chipset compatibility issues and can have my wireless located wherever
I have a CAT5, not just in my computer room.

Good luck in your project.

PS. Also, by installing Linux on it (the WRT54G) gives me very
flexible admin ability. Granted, some of this stuff I do just because
I can ... its Open Source after all. :-)
