linux does not auto detect monitor type

I changed the monitor from the one which was present during Linux
installation.Nothing is shown on the monitor. It seems , linux cannot
detect and automaticaaly find the driver for new CRT display
connected . Only if I can login I may try to configure the new CRT
display. As I am not at all able to login, how can I proceed.First I
tried with an LCD monitor but it didn't work. I thought there may be
incompatibility with the LCD . Now I connected a new CRT display ,
still the problems continue.

Thanks in advance.
Wills.
