WG311v3 wireless card with Debian GNU/Linux?

Hi.
I was trying to get my Netgear WG311v3 wireless networking card
working under Debian GNU/Linux using NdisWrapper and the drivers
provided with the card, and I'm having a lot of trouble. When I load
the NdisWrapper program using "modprobe", then do "iwconfig", the card
shows up, but I cannot change the ESSID. Attempting to "ifup"/"ifdown"
it leads to a kernel crash of some sort (something like "SET failed on
device wlan0 : Invalid argument", then "localhost kernel : Oops 0002"
followed by what looks like a core dump of some kind. Since "kernel"
appears there I'm *assuming* this is a kernel crash.). What gives,
anyway?
I'm totally at a loss here. I've looked all over the Internet but have
not yet found any way to get this to work!!! :( Is there anything I
can do? I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.
