Aborting before dialing would prevent up-up from running. You certainly
do have to "make the connection first with MINICOM."

Well Duh! Hard to believe I missed that but I did. You shouldn't be
using minicom to make a connection for pppd to use. A chat script would
be my choice although there are alternatives (kppp, wvdial, ect.).
