The term "gateway" is more general and more confusing. When talking about an IP forwarding device the term "router" should be used instead.

Here is a quote from the introduction of RFC 1812 "Requirements for IP Version 4 Routers" :

The gateway is

This looks very much like the definition of a router to me.

A router knows the address of the
gateway, and redirects packets to the gateway if they aren't addressed for
a node on the local network.

Huh ? This is what hosts do, not routers. Where do you get this definition from ?
