PCMCIA CD-reader

Is anyone using the ide-cs module with a PCMCIA CD-reader?
It hangs for me, on my Sony Picturebook (C1VFK)
with a Sony CD51 CD-reader.
I'm using the 2.4.21 and 2.4.22-pre10 kernels.

I found a few messages about this on google,
but no solution, even though the code is pretty ancient.
Surely it must have been sorted out somewhere?
Or maybe there is something odd about the CD51?

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.
