Smartling modem driver

Reading the internet I got the impression, that much winmodems in
notebooks can make working, using the Smartlink driver.
It is the same with my Toshiba Satellite 1110-Z16. The internal
modem is working with the slmdm-2.7.9 driver, found at
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/resources.html
Checking /var/log/messages I found entries telling the driver
is not fitting to my modem, but it is working fine.
As far as I understand the driver is not free. Now the question,
is it ok to use the driver with the Satellite or is it not?
