On most newer cameras the memory is accessed as a USB storage medium.
You'll probably don't need gphoto2.

Just do (as root):

mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera

If that doesn't work, try /dev/sda, /dev/sda[2-4], etc. If it still
doesn't work, you'll probably don't have the right kernel modules. Just
post the output of "lsmod" and "cdrecord -scanbus".

To manage your photos I recommend GQview:
