Laptop Won't Boot off Network

All,
Looking for some guidance on RH9. I installed the OS with my laptop in the
dock with all hardware attached so Kudzu would recognize & attempt to
configure the various outboard bits. In doing so, the system now requires
the network to fire up X.

If I attempt to boot without the network attached, I get authentication
errors at X login since the laptop can't see the network. Even as root.
Weird.

Makes the laptop portability thing kinda difficult.

What can I change to create what Wintel folks would call a local profile on
the box, or how can I get X to authenticate my login without the network?

TIA
cf
