keyboard and mouse: USB vs. built-in

    When my laptop's screen blanks, it unblanks just fine if I touch the
    built-in keyboard or mouse, but it remains blanked if I hit the USB
    keyboard or mouse. Any idea why?

    It's a Thinkpad running 2.4.20-20.9.
