The apm daemon or acpi daemon has to be running for auto-off to work.
For the daemon to run, support for it has to be compiled into the
kernel. I've never touched Mandrake, but I'm sure the kernel is already
compiled that way.
On my Fedora laptop, acpid works much better than apmd. I have to say
"apm=off" as a boot option to keep apm from interfering with acpi.
Otherwise just insure acpid is running.
