I just got a Toshiba <a
href="http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=313046&pfp=BROWSE">A75-S276</a>
laptop. I used one of these NTFS tools to split the Windows partition
to 60GB and make 20 GB linux one. I installed Linux Mandrake 10 onto
the second drive.

The problem I am having is that the mouse (touchpad) does not work
under the Linux boot (fine with windows). It is a Alps pointing
device according to the windows driver. Says PS/2 device.

I have read a bit and noticed alot of people are having tapping issues
with these. But I can't get the pointer to work at all. I tried
running hardDrake and configured the device for PS/2. No luck. I
have also tried every type of mouse under hardDrake. No luck.

I believe mouseconf has been replaced? (I havent used linux in about
5 years)

I also tried editting the XF86Config by hand. I won't go into all the
details- but I had no luck there either. Basically, I see /dev/mouse
and /dev/input/mice in the devices directory. I tried the mouse
driver for both with various options. No luck.

I also tried the tpconfig tool. Whereever I run that- it says no Alps
or Synpatic touchpads found.

When I did my NTFS resize- I used <a
href="http://www.sysresccd.org/">System rescue</a> CD and the mouse
worked for that. I will try Knoppix and see if that works.

Has anyone installed Linux on this laptop before? Is there another
distrubution I should try? I am not tied to mandrake. I seem to see
that people are having issues with Mandrake 10 vs. Mandrake 9 in this
area? Can anyone confirm.

I had a few other issues- such as configuring the wifi and getting a
DVD to play. (the FBI warning popped up and then shoved out some
error warning). If I get past this first issue- I will probably be
posting with those.
