Sounds like any of the setups you mentioned would probably work with
this machine, provided the VGA-out port on the laptop can handle the
sync ranges necessary for such high resolutions. The VGA-out on my
Thinkpad A22p (1600x1200 LCD) can only handle 1280x1024. Radeon cards
can do dual-head, so you'll just have to figure out which setup works
best for you. "man radeon" so you know what options are available, and
if you plan to watch movies on the CRT, pay close attention to the
"OverlayOnCRTC2" option.

*WHY*? The screen size you mentioned is not a standard VESA size, so
forget running a framebuffer console. Its weird aspect ration will make
the normal VGA modes look totally bogus. And text-only consoles suck
when there are alternatives. Run blackbox and use xterms if you're
worried about resource consumption.
