I've tried Koppix and Runt, but both need either a cd or a floppy drive.
My laptop does have a cd, but we have purchased a SanDisk 128 meg
thumb drive for each laptop, hence I'm trying to create a USB mini kernel
    in case XP doesn't boot.

I installed the http://linuxmobile.sourceforge.net file on my RH 9 box.
All the elements to create a mini kernel are there on hda1 under
    /linux_mobile_system_v1.0:
    /images
    /boot
    /syslinux-1.52 directories
and lsmrd.lmg.nogz, lmsrd.img, mkramdisk files, etc.

Not sure what is the next step to make the kernel on the 128meg SanDisk
    thumb drive,
mounted as /dev/sda1 into a bootable system.
