Looking back at my R40 page http://www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadR40.htm
I see:

"The stock 8.0 kernel (2.4.18-14) had severe problems with the IDE
chipset of this R40, but an updated kernel (2.4.20-13.8) resolved that
issue."

I don't remember the exact details, except that stock RH8 didn't
work...

Not sure if that relates to your R50p issues, but if you are using the
stock RH8 kernel, an upgrade might sort things out.
