Just to follow up, updating to the 2.4.28 kernel was the solution. The
system is totally smooth during heavy disk access now.

The only catch is that some of my binary-only modules aren't loading
anymore. For example, I load an AFS module so I can have direct access
to our filesystems at work. It said that it couldn't find an
appropriate symbol table to map to. I guess I could poke around and see
if there are other versions of this module out there.

In any case, thanks to all for the answers. The R50p needs a newer
kernel than 2.4.18 in order to work decently.
