I have a 3.5 year old high-end (back then) Compaq. It has served me
well, running Win2k, WinXP and various SuSE Linux versions. Software and
Firmware updates have been well supported on HP's website. Service- and
maintenance information has been easy to find. HP is responsive on web-
and telephone support. I have upgraded the memory and the harddisk
based on information gathered from retailers and distributors in my
country - HP apparently supplies their representatives with good
documentation.

I have one complaint: The driver for the display adapter lost
functionality when migrating from 2k to XP. My recommendation is that
you go for a laptop with an Nvidia card; ATI leaves something to be
desired with regards to both Linux and Windows.
