The unspecified error is CSS locking. Try a homebrew DVD, a Region 0 (if
you're anywhere but region 1), or a copy of a public domain movie (which
shouldn't be locked).
Even with Linux, a license is required for a CSS decryption device (in
this context, a software key).
I have my own method of dealing with CSS/Macrovision/region coded DVDs.
I don't buy them.
