    I hear that if you call up Sager ( http://www.sagernotebook.com/ ,
    warning, index.html is Flash-infested) and speak to an actual human
    being, you can get them to sell you a laptop that has no OS installed on
    it. I've never tried this though, because they don't sell laptops with
    Trackpoints, and I hate touchpads.

    $1000 is a lot to pay for a laptop these days. The OP should think
    about buying refurbished, because you get more computer for your $ if
    you do that. Also, since most refurbished models have been around for a
    year or so, there are almost always guides for installing @DISTROS on
    them available via tuxmobil or linux-laptops. All 3 laptops I've ever
    owned have been refurbished, and I've had exactly 2 mechanical problems
    with them. (One didn't get fixed because it cost too much, the other
    was a fan that gave out which cost me $55 and 30 minutes of
    screwdriver-fu.) FWIW, IBM laptops are pretty solidly built, and most
    of them work very well with Linux. HTH,
