Ok, I've tried looking everywhere for information on this issue, but I can
only get bits and pieces, so I figure this is my last place to ask.
I recently got a Performa 6115 from a friend (the infamous NuBus macs).
Anyways, being bored, I decided to put Linux on it. I read on the net how I
needed to use mklinux for this specific box because of the issues with the
NuBus. I made a cd from the image on their site, went onto the tiny tiny
hard drive (I'm only doing this just because I can, no grand purpose in
mind). In any case, I apparently misread the instructions. I thought that
the CD was bootable and that I could redo the partitions (which I did),
keeping only the AppleDriver partitions and basically nothing else. Rebooted
the machine after writing the information. I did not realize I needed the
MacOS in a minimal partition to get the bootloader running to run the Linux
stuff. Ugh.
Anyways, I have no cds for this thing, so I can't whip out a MacOS cd to
boot the sucker up. I can't get any such cds from the friend either (they
are 600 miles away and if they could find the disks, they would send them,
but they've gone through several Macintosh revisions, so the disks for this
old thing are long gone). I got the bin files for Mac OS 7.5.3 from
apple.com, but as I really only have PCs, I can't write them to floppies.
I've been looking for a rescue disk, but apparently, while they are easy to
make on a Mac, they're not so easy to make on PC.
I did make a network rescue floppy disk from a .dsk image (using WinImage),
but that gets me basic network functionality and Appleshare (it isn't on my
home network though), I cannot access the hard drive on the Mac or the CD
drive (probably the network access disk doesn't provide for that).
Apparently, if I had another Mac, I might be able to substitute files on
another disk for files on the network disk, but.... I don't have another Mac
(if I did, then I would just image that).
So, basically, I have a Mac with a hard drive, but no OS, a cd of mklinux,
many many blank floppies, many many PCs, and no other Macs or Mac software.
Is there a solution to my dilemma (and yes, I do realize that I should be
wondering if this is worth the trouble, but after all the time spent so far,
I'm determined not to let the hardware win). I can't seem to boot from any
cds I make.
Any ideas would be appreciated, or a point in the right direction. Thanks
for your time!
