I had Gentoo running for a while on a very adequate x86 system -- while
the portage system is fantastic and usually very up-to-date, compile
time on large packages is loooong.
On a slow system (I don't know how 9600s compare) you could be in for a
very long wait indeed.
RH-based systems might be limiting by comparison, but you'll be up and
running a fair bit quicker.
